This course will enable learners to acquire a basic ability to communicate with Deaf people using British Sign Language. You will get a recognised qualification at the end of the course.

BSL Level 1 comprises of 3 units:

Unit 101: An introduction to BSL.

Unit 102: Conversational BSL.

Unit 103: BSL in Education and Work settings.

BSL Level 2

Open Hands Communication offers BSL Pre Level 2 and BSL Level 2 courses.

BSL Pre Level 2

The course has been designed to help candidates prepare for the Signature BSL Level 2 qualification. It enables the candidate to develop their knowledge, skills, language and grammar before moving onto the BSL Level 2 course.

This course is highly recommended for students who have passed BSL Level 1 and wish to progress to the BSL Level 2 course.

BSL Level 2

This course is for anyone who is hearing and has family, friends, colleagues who are deaf. It can also benifit people that wish to acquire a deeper knowledge of being able to communicate in British Sign Language.

Candidates will be able to learn how to participate in a range of everyday conversations using the appropriate conversational strategies. This will include using vocabulary, without misunderstanding, asking for clarification, demonstrating grammatical features.

By the end of the course the candidates will:

  • understand a signed narrative
  • be able to sign a narrative
  • have an in-depth conversation using BSL

BSL Level 3

Open Hands Communication offers BSL Pre Level 3 and BSL Level 3 Certificate courses.

BSL Pre Level 3

The course has been designed to help candidates prepare for the Signature BSL Level 3 qualification. It enables the candidate to develop their knowledge, skills and language before moving onto the BSL Level 3 Certificate course.

This course is highly recommended for students who have passed BSL Level 2 and wish to progress further, as well as those who do not feel quite prepared to undertake, a full Level 3 course.

BSL Level 3 Certificate

Signature Level 3 Certificate in British/Irish Sign Language caters for the learning needs of those who already have knowledge and skills in British Sign Language (BSL) at Level 2.

The assessment of Level 3 Certificate in British/Irish Sign Language uses the National Language Standards at Level 3.

Qualification Structure

The qualification is divided into two units, each of which can be achieved separately.

Unit BSL/ISL301 is the receptive unit, and Unit BSL/ISL302 is the productive unit.

Candidates collect and submit evidence for both units which demonstrates their ability to use BSL/ISL in a variety of topics. Both units are internally assessed by the centre and overseen by Signature.

Candidates are required to achieve both units for the full Level 3 Certificate in British Sign Language

Deaf Awareness

As public awareness of Deafness has grown and people desire to communicate with Deaf people, there has been a corresponding interest in British Sign Language (BSL).

BSL is the most effective way of communicating with Deaf people. and can be used for both personal and professional purposes.

The Deaf Awareness programme can be modified to meet each organisation’s specific needs. In addition value is added to each workshop presentation through a very interactive delivery style and presented by a highly skilled, professional Deaf trainer – bringing the workshop presentations to life.

Please note that the Deaf Awareness training workshops can be held either at the organisations’ premises or alternatively at our office.
